Birmingham City Council (BCC)

Birmingham City Council is the UK’s largest authority responsible for delivery of a large number of services across the city (education, social services, economic development etc). One recent focus is the co-development (along with other West Midlands and city-wide institutions) of policy on science city. The Regional, European and International Division at the Council has become particularly involved in this work with the aim of making Birmingham an important knowledge economy nationally, on a European level and internationally.

The Regional, European and International Division at Birmingham City Council will be responsible for the overall management of the CASC project and for managing the final project conference. The CASC project administrator will also be based in the Division.

Birmingham City Council (particularly the Regional, European and International Division) has great experience in the co-ordination of complex/ multi-partner European projects. Birmingham City Council has been/is a lead partner on the following projects:

Staff

Dr Jacqueline Homan. An academic until 2004, she has experience of both participating in, and managing, network-based projects. Since working at Birmingham City Council, she has been project manager of the URBACT METROGOV project, exploring city-region governance. Jacqueline will be managing the CASC project on behalf of Birmingham City Council.

Jill Robinson. Jill is the former head of the Regional, European and International Division. She has wide and detailed experience of working on European projects, both as a partner and as the project lead. She will be working on the CASC project as a consultant to bring her expertise to the project team in Birmingham.

Heather Powell. Heather has experience in organising overseas travel for all Members and Officers of the Birmingham City Council. She also provides support on the development of the City Council's international relationships with our partner cities and transnational partners. She will be undertaking the day-to-day administrative and financial aspects of the project as well as managing the web content and liaising with partners on meeting and workshop organisation.

Birmingham City University (BCU)

Birmingham City University is a large, diverse, historic provider of higher education and CPD for the people of Birmingham and beyond. Currently consisting of six faculties and seven campuses, the University delivers over 300 courses to more than 24,000 students. The catchment area extends from inner Birmingham to the Far East and the United States. Local, regional, national and international partners play a key role in much of the university’s work.

BCU’s main responsibility within the CASC project, to be carried out by CRQ, will be an evaluative one, undertaking project analysis and producing the final policy recommendations. Additional to this, CRQ will play a key supporting role within the overall UK partnership and will also be developing the digital technologies and website for the CASC project.

Birmingham City University has a considerable amount of experience in developing different types of methodologies and carrying out projects for example:

  • Equal programme Agender Evaluation, funded by the Learning and Skills Council.
  • National E-books Observatory project: Deep Log Analysis, funded by JISC.
  • ESF/Aimhigher Summer Schools (mentoring project), funded by ESF and HEFCE.
  • Evaluation of Business Diagnostic Tools for Creative Industries, funded by NESTA.
  • Feasibility Study towards adopting Birmingham Eastside as a Regional Demonstrator of Sustainable Urban Redevelopment, funded by EPSRC and AWM.

In particular, CRQ’s experience includes being lead partner and Associate Lead Partner on many EU projects, for example Training Criminal Justice Professionals in Harm Reduction Services for Vulnerable Groups and the European Commission DG SANCO Public Health Programme.

Staff

Professor Morag MacDonald is Director of the Centre for Research into Quality. Morag's main fields of expertise are prisons, and related health issues, and social research methodology. Morag has many years experience in applying for and running several successful European funded projects.

Dr James Williams joined CRQ in 2001 and is Senior Researcher. His main specialisms are the HE/community interface, student experience of HE, and quality in HE. James has carried out a lot of research into the student experience of HE across European regional boundaries and speaks regularly at European conferences, he is Associate Editor of the international journal, Quality in Higher Education.

Jane Farrow works for a central support unit within the University, the Corporate Development Centre and supports academics in accessing funding opportunities and bid writing.

Thinktank – Birmingham’s Science Museum (TT)

Thinktank is Birmingham's science museum. Thinktank's aim is to help us all understand how science and technology may shape our lives and how we can use science and technology to make a better world. There are 10 galleries of science exhibits at Thinktank, many are interactive and several show the extraordinary collections of Birmingham's contribution to the world in science, engineering and technology. We host one of the world's most up-to-date Planetarium (opened in December 2005). Thinktank's strength is in its offer to families (200,000+ visitors per annum) and to schools (70,000). It employs over 70 people.

Thinktank is the leading organisation for the public engagement with science in the West Midlands. It is a major component in the Birmingham 'Science City' initiative and is spearheading the economic regeneration of a major part of the City of Birmingham. Thinktank has been designated as a major partner with New York Hall of Science in developing the Science Career Ladder. It led on the regional launch of 1001 Inventions - a celebration of the Islamic contribution to science in 2007. Other national and international projects have been:

  • Projecting science - a government initiative to develop science learning involving two other major science centres.
  • Developing Planetaria internationally - Europe, Australasia & China.
  • The Science Career Ladder - see above.
  • Doing Dialogue - a national partnership project managed by Ecsite uk engaging 14-19 year olds on moral and ethical science issues with Thinktank presenting the findings at a European-funded conference in Italy in 2007.

Dr Nick Winterbotham has responsibility as Chief Executive Officer for both Thinktank and Millennium Point trusts. As CEO and team leader of Thinktank and Millennium Point, he manages two £5m businesses. He is the Chairman of Ecsite uk and has formerly worked at CEO level in three major museum services and chaired a school governing body in Carlisle. Qualifications include PhD (Nottingham University, 2005) in museum learning; Berkeley University MMI - Getty leadership alumnus (1998); AMA (1982).

Dr Tim Caulton is Learning and Audience Development Director, responsible for the learning and marketing teams at Thinktank, and for managing many of the external partnerships (including CASC) in Thinktank's role as public engagement coordinator for Birmingham Science City and Young Peoples Programme coordinator for the British Science Festival 2010.

Julia Kingston acting as Head of Learning is responsible for the learning programmes in the museum, formal schools programmes, the offer for the general public, the operation of the Planetarium and ensuring all programmes are accessible and audience focused.

European Office of Cyprus (EOC)

The European Office of Cyprus is a not-for-profit organisation with offices in Brussels and Nicosia. It currently represents 22 members, including municipalities, higher education institutes, quasi-autonomous non-governmental organisations and associations of banks. The EOC's goals are twofold: to closely monitor EU policies and to maximise EU funding opportunities, so as to assist its members in actively participating in the EU environment.

The Nicosia central office manages and distributes information concerning current EU policies and funding opportunities. It also supports members in preparing and submitting projects for funding.

The Brussels Office is responsible for establishing constructive relations and co-operations with similar liaison offices, participating in European networks and advocating members' interests to the EU institutions.

Dr. Gregory Makrides: Mathematician, Executive Director of EOC, Director of Research and International Relations of the University of Cyprus, President of the Cyprus Mathematical Society, President of the European Association of ERASMUS coordinators. He has a considerable experience in applying for and managing European funds for high-value projects. He is an experienced external evaluator of European projects with a strong background in the development of research and education policies.

Rosemary Strevinioti: Lawyer with LL.M. in European Law. As the Brussels-based officer of the EOC, she has considerable experience in EU projects management, being the liaison between the project and its member organisations, in an effort to offer all-round input to the project. Working as coordinator of the Cyprus' Delegation to the Committee of the Regions and as EU project officer for research and education, Rosemary has an in-depth knowledge of the European higher education challenges and the active role that universities can play in the regional development.

Despina Tsikoudi: Political Scientist with M.A. in European Politics. Specialised in the field of European regional policy, she is offering her expertise within the EOC Brussels office by providing information and technical support to local authorities concerning EU funds and cooperation opportunities with public and private organisations. Working in close cooperation with other Brussels regional representations, Despina's role consists in bringing together regional decision makers, practitioners and the EU institutions to engage in a collective effort to make the knowledge economy a reality.

Xunta de Galicia (XG) (Galician Government)

The Directorate General for Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) is a department within the Galician Government. DG RDI is responsible for the implementation of the Research, Technological Development and Innovation policies in Galicia. The DG collaborates with all local actors responsible for research and innovation in Galicia (for example, the scientific community, universities, technological centres and businesses). It plans, co-ordinates and follows up the Galician Research, Development and Technological Innovation Plan, which is the main RTD funding scheme in the region. The Programme of Social Communication and Awareness of science is one of the main strands of the Plan. It carries out a number of actions promoting research and innovation, including Galician Science Week.

As a public institution, the DG for RDI has direct access to all the local public and private research and innovation sector. Main tasks within the project include exchanging best practice in engaging the local communities in science and disseminating the outcomes in Galicia.

DG RDI has participated in a large number of European projects, including:

  • REGINA (Interreg IIIB Atlantic Area): establishing a durable regional scientific, technological and Innovation knowledge management in the Atlantic area.
  • CIRCLE (FP6 ERA-NET): Climate Impact Research Coordination for a Larger Europe.

Silvia López, Social Communication and Awareness Programme Manager. As co-ordinator of this programme since 2003, she has experience in science communication and dissemination and in co-ordinating european projects. She manages the resources and the activities of the DG in science and society issues.

Rosa Tedín, Social Communication and Awareness Programme Officer. Having worked for the Council of Culture, the main culture public institution in Galicia, Rosa has strong experience in cultural dissemination. She is responsible for the management of the Galician Science Week and other dissemination events.

Vanessa Bretón, Social Communication and Awareness Programme Officer, is responsible for writing articles and reports about the activities carried out by the DG RDI.

Pedro Peón, Social Communication and Awareness Programme Officer, has experience in European project management from Equal and Interreg IIIC projects. He is in charge of the trans-national dimension of the Social Communication and Awareness Programme.

Sevilla Global (SG)

Sevilla Global is a local public actor in the field of economic development and business support measures and initiatives: development and revitalisation of industrial land; innovation and cluster development; city marketing and international co-operation; and metropolitan business information systems. SG was established in September 2000 as an Inc. Company whose sole stakeholder is the Sevilla City Council. The management structure includes politicians and experts - from both the academic and business communities.

Silvia de los Santos Trigo. Project Manager of Innovation and Businesses Department. During the last two years she has been an innovation consultant for aeronautics SME companies helping them in new R&D projects. She has collaborated in a FP6 project involving most of the European Aerospace Clusters.

Universeum AB (UAB)

Universeum is Sweden’s national science discovery centre, established by His Majesty the King on 8 June 2001 and has received more than three million visitors since then. The mission is to create experiences that increase young people’s desire to enhance their knowledge and to become actively involved with the natural sciences, technology, and environmental awareness. The main target group is children and teenagers (5-19 years), with an emphasis on girls, and their parents and teachers.

Universeum includes a mixture of living and technical exhibitions, featuring exciting aquarium installations, a living rainforest model, a Swedish landscape as well as a large workshop for experimentation - combining nature and technology. A National Scientific Advisory Council has been set up to ensure that Universeum adopts a scientific approach.

During the last year there have been a lot of science events at Universeum about space; the European day in May about “A sustainable society”; the 100 days of climate change (with Al Gore as the main attraction); and, a number of science debates and so forth.

The Faculty of Business and Administration at The University of Bucharest, is one of the leading higher education institutions in Romania. CCSTI

University of Lyon (UOL)

UOL is a newly founded public body which groups together the 11 most important higher education institutions in Lyon. UOL has 100,000 registered students, of whom 15,000 are post-grads. There are 5,500 full time faculty members, 510 laboratories producing 800 Ph.D theses every year.

UOL is responsible for elaborating and enforcing the policy and activities of its members in technology transfer, postgraduate and post-doctoral studies, co-operation with research and other bodies, nationally and abroad. It shelters the CCSTI of le Rhône, a Science Centre with a territorial mission, which conducts the science outreach activities of the University and enforces the national action plan for SiS. UOL will open a Science Shop by the end of 2008. The City Council, the conurbation of Lyon, as well as the Region of Rhône-Alpes are closely associated to the university (e.g. budget, policy), which makes UOL one of the most integrated academic and local economic development tools nation-wide.

UOL and its members are engaged in a wide range of cultural, educational and research EU programmes (e.g. FPs, Erasmus, Leonardo). In particular, UOL houses an ERAMORE desk.

Laurent Schmitt. Laurent is an explainer at the CCSTI of Le Rhône. With a grounding in biology, he gathered a large experience on Science Communication through various positions in the Planetarium of Vaulx-en-Velin (Rhône), as an animator in the Oullins Science Film Festival(Rhône), one of the oldest in France. He participated as well to the foundation of Ebulliscience, a Hands-on Science Centre in Vaulx-en-Velin.

Armelle Bozok. Armelle assists already the director in the implementation and follow up of the European activities of the University of Lyon. She has a strong training in SME's accounting and finance.

INNOVA Észak-Alföld Regional Development and Innovation Agency Nonprofit LTD (INNOVA)

The Innova Észak-Alföld Regional Development and Innovation Agency holds a highly accentuated role in the implementation of the Regional Innovation Strategy of Észak-Alföld. The agency is one of the members of the network of the Hungarian Regional Innovation Agencies that were established in 2005 from the regional dimension of the National Innovation and Technology Fund coordinated by the National Office for Research and Technology.

Our mission, besides the implementation of the Regional Innovation Strategy is to become the sole innovation centre in Észak-Alföld region operating in a networking model and to achieve acknowledgement at national and international level.

INNOVA formulated more specifically the following direct objects to be realized in the region:

  • To enhance the innovation ability.
  • To spur market-oriented RDI cooperation.
  • To develop an innovation supportive environment.
  • Innovative human resource development.
  • Project management.

To achieve its mission and objectives the agency provides the following innovation services:

  • Innovation, management and marketing consultancy and trainings.
  • Strategic planning, resource coordination and management of decentralised funds.

INNOVA organise regional and international innovation events in the region and distribute the Annual Innovation Award.

Mrs. Márta Völgyiné Nadabán. Project management experience in national and international projects. She co-ordinates the RIS project in the Észak-alföld Region and the COGNAC – RTD OMC NET FP6 project, and the FP7 CLUSTHERM project.

Ms. Agnes Berde. She is responsible the international projects and project manager of the 6th Framework project called COGNAC and Biorefinery Euroview (role WP leader) and for the marketing and communication management issues of the Regional Innovation Agency.

Ms. Anita Tóth. She is responsible for the financial management of international projects and and has experience in Structural Funds. She prepares reports on the activities of INNOVA, develops networks and projects for innovation stakeholders of the region.

South Moravian Centre for International Mobility (JCMM)

The South Moravian Centre for International Mobility was established in 2005 by the South Moravian Regional Authority; the Technical University Brno; Masaryk University Brno and the Mendel University of Forestry and Agriculture Brno. In 2008 the University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences Brno also joined.

JCMM focuses on human resources for science and technology. JCMM supports incoming students and researchers to the South Moravian Region and enhances conditions for further development of talented students studying in the South Moravian Region.

The main aims of JCMM are to:

  • Support talented students with interest in science at high school level, e.g. through science projects, internships at universities and science institutes and e-learning courses.
  • Support talented PhD students through provision of grants for top-class PhD students.
  • Support inflow of talented university students from abroad by providing fellowships for the best foreign students.
  • Support inflow of excellent researchers from abroad by allocating grants to the best incoming researchers (SoMoPro) and providing administrative support (EURAXESS).
  • Support reintegration of Czech researchers currently working abroad, again through allocation of grants to the best reintegrating researchers (SoMoPro) and provision of administrative support (EURAXESS).

As a main partner of the Regional Innovation Strategy the South Moravian Centre for International Mobility is also currently working on actions in the field of the popularisation of science and technology in the region.

Dana Becker Vejborná. After an international career in landscape architecture, Dana has decided to accept the challenge of working with gifted and talented students. She is currently managing a project, Education and Further Development of Talented Youth in the Region of South Moravia, which is funded by European Structural Funds and the national budget of the Czech Republic. The project goal is to offer high school students gifted in natural and technical science an opportunity to develop their talent and to offer their teachers effective tools for support and improvement of students with exceptional abilities.

Libuše Chládková. Libuše has personal experience of working with EU funded projects and the management of distribution of projects: firstly as a national co-ordinator for projects under the priority Human Resource Development of the EEA/Norway grants at Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs of the Czech Republic; and secondly as the project manager of an educational project funded by Structural Funds at Regional Development Agency of South Moravia. At the moment she is managing a project funded by the Framework 7 Programme ‘People’ (Marie Curie Actions) aimed at attracting top-class foreign researchers and reintegration of Czech researchers currently working abroad (SoMoPro).

Veronika Němcová. After a career in the international trade and development and leisure, travel and tourism industries she become the main manager of a new project which aims at establishing a Science Museum in Brno.

Libuše and Dana are currently working at South Moravian Centre for International Mobility as project managers. Veronika Němcová is employee of the regional development agency and partly of the South Moravian Centre for International Mobility.

Centre of Administration and Operations of the ASCR

The Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic is a public non-university scientific institution of the Czech Republic encompassing a complex of research institutes engaged primarily in basic research. ASCR formulates and pursues conceptual policy of science and research, participates in national and international research programs, promotes cooperation with application sphere, and fosters the development of education, scholarship and culture.

The principal task of the Centre of Administration and Operations of the ASCR (Centre) is to provide a research infrastructure for the Academy of Science of the Czech Republic and its Institutes. This priority is also specified in the research objective of the Centre: "Implementation of the research infrastructure and development of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, a necessary prerequisite of the qualitative development of scientific disciplines of the ASCR".

It also promotes science, particularly to young people through a range of events and activities including press conferences, public debates, workshops, science popularisation events and several projects aimed at science education of secondary schools students and teachers. The Department of Projects and Grants is highly experienced in managing/co-ordinating complex multi-partner projects both at national and European level.

Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS)

SASS is China’s oldest institution for the humanities and social sciences and is the largest one outside of Beijing. As a leading think-tank and academic institution, SASS conducts theoretical research and applied studies with a special focus on important issues arising from the social and economic transformation and sustainable development.

Among other topics SASS focuses on the studies of regional and urban development, creative industry strategy, spreading sciences and integration of universities and research organisations, business and the communities. SASS has been involved in the research on and development of the theme of World Expo 2010 Shanghai “Better City, Better Life”.

The International Programs Office of SASS functions as a co-ordination body for R&D on Shanghai as the national largest city of knowledge economy. Museos Científicos Coruñeses (mc2)

Museos Científicos Coruñeses is part of La Coruna City Council. It is a network devoted to the popularisation of science and includes three science centres: Casa das Ciencias (physical sciences and astronomy); Domus (humankind) and Aquarium Finisterrae (marine ecosystems). The mission includes the development of exhibitions, films, publications, science fairs, lectures, research projects and other initiatives to promote science among the public. The museums receive 675,000 visitors per year, plus many more through off-site initiatives such as publications, documentary films, travelling exhibitions, newspaper articles, for example.

The staff at mc2 has been involved in various EU projects related to science communication, including the creation of the Descartes Awards for Science Communication, the Focus on Genes exhibition and EUR-OCEANS (European network of excellence for Ocean Ecosystems Analysis). mc2 has also received funding from the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) to develop projects including exhibitions and documentaries. mc2 staff have evaluated science communication projects funded by FECYT, and have provided advice for the Integral Evaluation System for the National Plan for the Promotion of Science.

Marcos Pérez: Director, Casa das Ciencias. He is responsible for this museum’s EU-funded travelling exhibition ‘Focus on Genes’. He has participated as a consultant for the Descartes Prize for Science Communication and managed several exhibitions, planetarium shows and research projects on informal science education.

Dr. Patricia Barciela. Director, Domus (House of Mankind). She has managed numerous interactive exhibitions as well as several science communication projects on human evolution, health and neuroscience funded by private companies (Bayer, Novartis, Caixanova) and the public sector - FECYT.

Dr. Francisco Franco. Director, Aquarium Finisterrae. He leads this institution’s role in EUR-OCEANS (FP6), and coordinates the Consultation Campaign on Schools on the Green Paper on a Future Maritime Policy for the EU. He is an active member of EUAC (European Union of Aquarium Curators) and several other professional networks.
